"Great Teachers Are Equal Opportunists" Chapter 1: Schmidt

In each of my physical education classes, I will include of the each of the multiple intelligences within lessons that I teach. Throughout, this semester as a student teacher, I will begin to get to know my students as well as different ways they learn best. Understanding how my students learn best I will modify lessons, activities, and assessment to better fit the needs of my students. It is now my turn as the teacher to teach students in a way that they are all included and highlighted in my lessons throughout my student teaching experience. I believe using the multiple intelligences will help promote and encourage students to learn best and I will reach all students despite their differences in learning styles. Laurel states in the chapter that a child’s intelligences will grow as they mature, and in the right environment the teacher will help students grow academically. My goal is to create an environment not only for physical activity, but also an environment that promotes intellectual growth.

When students are challenged using multiple intelligences, students have the opportunity to become creative thinkers, problem solvers, and they develop more complex and creative ideas. Teaching and applying multiple intelligences in my physical education classes will allow me to easily implement Schmidt’s theory of “full brain learning.” In physical education, students will be given many opportunities throughout my teaching that will allow students to communicate and socialize with their peers, work in teams, many different activities that will promote physical activity outside of school, clear instruction that will eliminate any confusion, and integration of other subject areas to create a collaborative environment. The ideas listed above are just a few that I have plans to incorporated thus far. Students will be given more opportunities in the physical education environment to grow as thinkers; problem solvers, and boost their levels of motivation and confidence.

This chapter of “Classroom Confidential” gave me a good insight to what type of learning should take place and what I hope my class will become. I know incorporating and reaching each of the intelligences will be a challenge but I am up for it, and ready to make a difference within a physical education setting.

  1. Great thoughts on the Schmidt book. I hope it will continue to give you ideas you can use in your teaching.
